The City of Piqua is a community of 21,000 citizens located on Interstate 75, 30 miles north of Dayton, Ohio, near the intersection of Interstates 75 and 70. The District, organized in 1853 and incorporated in 1908, serves an area of approximately 55 square miles in Miami County, comprised of the City of Piqua, Washington Township and Springcreek Township.
The district’s facilities serve 3,700 students in: one kindergarten/preschool center, three primary schools (grades 1-3), three intermediate schools (grades 4-6), one junior high (grades 7-8), one high school (grades 9-12), plus a bus garage, an administrative building and several athletic complexes. The city's schools employ a total of 370 staff members -- teachers, administrators and support staff. We began the 2010-2011 school year with news from the Ohio Department of Education that the Piqua City School District received an "Effective" rating for the 2009-2010 school year. Although we achieved our highest ever performance indicator scores, our value-added data did not raise the district to the "Excellent" rating as it did for the 2008-2009 and 2007-2008 school years. Piqua City Schools is "Committed to Excellence" and will continue to focus on providing students with the tools they need in the 21st Century learning environment to achieve at the highest possible level. PRESS RELEASES FROM PCS
The following are the most recent press releases issued from Piqua City Schools regarding students/schools/staff, to inform the public.
City Schools Earn Award for Financial ReportingPiqua City Schools’ Treasurer Jeffrey W. Price received notification in late May that the district has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR), by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. Its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government entity and its management.
Price, as the individual primarily responsible for the preparation of the award-winning CAFR, is also awarded an Award of Financial Reporting Achievement for the 2007 report. The 2007 report is available at the district’s Administrative Offices in print.
Each CAFR submitted to the GFOA is judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, including demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" to share the financial story and encourage users and user groups to read the CAFR. Piqua City Schools has earned the Certificate of Achievement from the GFOA every year since 1997.
Registering New Students in SummerNew Student Registration at District’s Ash Street Administrative Offices This Summer
Families wishing to enroll students new to the Piqua City Schools may register their students at the district’s Administrative Offices, 719 E. Ash Street, in Piqua. Staff there have all necessary forms and welcome packets ready for families, and will be available to assist with the registration process weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Central registration for K-12 students new to the district streamlines the process for families. There is no need to wait until August because schools’ offices are closed. Registration forms are available now at PCS Administrative Offices, and may also be downloaded from the district website at www.piqua.org. Parents/guardians may obtain and complete the required forms prior to visiting the Administrative Offices, or complete the forms there.
Registration will be easier and more accessible during summer months with the central registration process. Instead of going to several schools, it should reduce time and visits for families with more than one child to register and also offer convenient times when schools’ offices are closed several weeks during the summer months.
To register students, parent/guardians should also bring the following documents with them for each student to be registered: birth certificate, social security card, records of inoculations, custodial records (if applicable), IEP/MFE records (if applicable), school records (if previously enrolled elsewhere), and proof of residency.
Once central registration is completed, student information will be forwarded by the school district to the appropriate school prior to the start of the school year. High school and junior high students will complete a scheduling process at the schools, after central registration is completed. Registration for kindergarten students will also include making an appointment for screening at Nicklin Learning Center, at another time.
For further information regarding student registration, please call Piqua City Schools Administrative Offices at 773-4321, extension 0501.
